Topic: Gallery posting guidelines

Here are a few guidelines to bear in mind when posting images in the gallery forum.

1) Don't make the image too small or too large. The sizes should fall somewhere between 300 x 450 pixels to 600 x 900 pixels. If you want to post larger files which can be very interesting to see, please post an external link.

2) Please don't start multiple threads showing different images of the same subject, i.e. multiple threads such as "Summer house", "More of the summer house", "Some pics I forgot to post of the summer house". If you have more pics to add from the same batch then please edit your existing thread or merely add them to the end of the thread.

3) Please don't post too many threads on the same day. Two seems a sensible limit - you can always add more the next day. This is just to prevent some people from getting 'carried away' and posting indiscriminately. You can always post a whole batch in one thread.

4) Unless the images are too large to embed in the thread (see point no.1 above) please embed the images by inserting the URL in between a set of [img]and[/img] tags, e.g. http://xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.jpg. There is no facility at the moment to host your images with this forum so they will need to be hosted externally.

That's all I can think of at the moment. Keep all the great images coming!

Graham

I thought this server automatically resized large pictures?
always has.

M42 Takumar  50mm f1.4   200mm f3.5 (work of art)
M42 Tair-3 300mm f4.5,  Zenitar 16mm,(both Russian)

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

I assume it is your browser scaling the images using primitive nearest-neighbour interpolation which just makes the images look ragged.

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

Nope
The pictures look perfect just downscaled and my browser's settings definitely have that feature turned off.
(Firefox) Mac osx.4
It only happens on this server no other forum I'm a member of.

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

Yeah it depends on the browser, which is a bad idea anyway.. So getting as close to 1:1 to post in the forum is best anyway. It also prevent people posting a 6MB 8MP JPEG because it "gets resized anyway" big_smile

Canon 5DII and a few lens -- Tachihara 8x10. Chamonix 45N-1, Crown Graphic 4x5. Moskva, Zeiss Super Ikonta C
Bronica S2A, Agfa Super Isolette, Iskra, Rolleiflex. Leica M2, Bessa R, Zorki 1,3,3M and a few more...

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

I have found that if your image is 800 pixels on the long side, but not over, the image is small enough for 56Kers to veiw without too much difficulty, yet large enough for a decent full screen view. Providing a link to original size image's is best if you want to share the large file. big_smile

I put that adapter in a safe place, never to be seen again.

First off, you will need a hosting service where you can upload your photos. After you have the photos uploaded somewhere on the internet, they are linked with the [img]Image URL[/img] tag system. There are some good ones available. Flickr, PBase, imageshack, photobucket and whatnot.
I use an FTP provided by my ISP so I don't really have any experience with those services.

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

Rod, you need to have the images hosted externally on a site like Flickr or pbase. Then you find a direct link to the image on the external site and paste it within  tags here.

For instance, this pic on Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/stevefe/336385340/

when you view the All Sizes page
http://www.flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id … amp;size=m

has a link that reads
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/124/3363 … 4fac14.jpg

and can be viewed direct here using the last link above and the img tags:

Sorry to be so dense. Do you mean I just post the above or am I missing something?
I am fairly new to posting pictures. thanks for the help. Rod.

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

Try with the image Steve posted. Right click and go to "Properties". You will find the line that starts with http://www and ends with .jpg ("Location" in Firefox and "Address/URL" in IE). Select that line and paste that inside the  tags.

This should work with picasa webgalleries. Some webgalleries have Javascript that prevents right-clicking. It works as reminder for the public that stealing photos from websites is wrong and generally immoral. Most of the time they're just a pain in the ass if you're just casually browsing. There's a workaround involving the HTML source code but it is likely that you won't need to go that route.

Also, try to ensure that you don't use spaces in filenames, Windows tends to allow this and its anot a good idea at all. Use underscores or hypens if you really must seperate words

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

Question,
After posting a comment/message or photo I cannot click out of the section I posted in. For example, I recently posted a picture in the gallery  but cannot go to any other topic area. Before, I could use the "jump" to another topic area on the forum. However I cannot do that now. After posting I have to click out of the site and re enter new. Any ideas? Suggestions?

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

Besides using the '[img]and[/img]' method of posting pictures, is there a way to embed the image into the post using the flickr method detailed below?

like....

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/minted-stereo/858956563/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1373/858956563_42ed558ea1_b.jpg" width="1024" height="804" alt="Olympus OM10 - Film 01 20" /></a>

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

minted: If you use Firefox you can install GreaseMonkey and this script:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/4771

It gives you another box on the photo page with proper "bbcode" for this board.

Re: Gallery posting guidelines

Help!
A very thicko person here!
As stated above:
I've opened an account and uploaded some pics to flickr.
I've then grabbed the link, put it between two tags as below,... and nothing!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/32951600@N08/3068304462/

Also, how is it when you click on a posting from, for example, foto-z, an image appears along with the text without having to follow a link.
Also, if anyones replying to my plight, can they please try and reply without using too many three letter  shortcuts, and remember they're talking to a computing novice?
Thanks.
