Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

The best ... Or the bests ?  I own several 135mm . The best results in term of sharpness, contrast, color rendition ... : Smc-Takumar 2,5/135, 3,5/135, Smc Pentax 3,5/135 (k) , Jupiter-37 am , Jupiter-11 (M39, M42), Schneider tele-Xenar 3,5/135,  Czj 3,5/135 , Tamron 2,8/135 Bbar, Meyer Orestor 2,8/135, Fujinon-T 3,5/135 (excellent !) ... If I had to choose only one I'll hesitate between the Jupiter-37 and the s-tak 2,5/135 , but not for ladies portaiture ... Old triplets are more eligible to do this kind of work : Carl zeiss Triotar, Schacht Travenar, Isco Iscotar, Angenieux 3,5/135 ...
In terms of availability, Pentax , Meyer, Czj , Tamron lenses are not hard to find... Jupiter-11 is common, the 37 is a relatively rare item. German Oldies are often present on Ebay usa and germany.

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

No mention of the Contax 135mm? That's a great performer. The Canon, although not manual focus, is also highly regarded.

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

Depends on your use. The Canon 135L is highly regarded, but for landscape at infinity, you may be left wanting.

135mm was one of those odd focal lengths that never grew on me. I've had a few, and never kept them very long. I have the Canon 70~200/2.8L, but it is too much of a tank. Currently, my longest manual lens is an 85. On my wish list is a 180. I don't think I will be missing out on anything in between, if I do, I will pursue a 100.

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

The Canon is big, right; but it's very good, it came out *easy* first in my 135 lens war. I like a good 135, even for landscape.. Actualy I can very well do landscape with 200mm anyway so 135 is "wide" in that case big_smile

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

I tested a bunch of 135mm's and you can find the test here if you search. I tested the Contax Zeiss 135mm f2.8, the Zeiss Jena 135mm, the Super Takumar 135mm f3.5 and the Yashica 135mm f2.8 DSB and was surprised to find the Yashica as being the sharpest. Now days I shoot mostly with a Leica 180mm f2.8 Elmarit which has better contrast that the Yashica. The Yashica can be had for around $40 and you need a Yashica/EOS adapter.

Stak 135/2.5 vers. 2 is engraved 35 meters before infinity on barrel, vers.1 is 30m instead. Second version is really more sharper !

jjlphoto, maybe I have a good sample but I really can't complain about the performance wide open.

Here i compare it to the CZJ 135. The Contax images are the upper ones

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

Graham- I'm guessing the Canon 135L would resolve a bit more of the individual sand grains in the mortar. Nice test, I'm surprided the Contax did this well. You"ve got a good sample there Graham, don't ever get rid of that one. When I was in school, I had a pre AI Old Nikon 28 Nikkor I used on my Nikon F2, and teachers would comment on how sharp it was. I never paid them much heed, and sold it to get a 28 AI to fit my new FE-2. Big mistake.

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

Hello,

I'm looking for a STak 135/2.5 in K mount.
I have asked the seller about the number written on the length ring: He answers me that the biggest number is a 15 before the infinite.

Do you know which version it is ? Is it a sharp one ?

Regards.

He must be selling you something else... No way a 135 can have just 15 before infinite ! Most 50mm go longer than that ! big_smile

In any case, as far as I know, one in K mount /must/ be version 2. The new optics were made before the K mount was released.... The version 1-2 is only for the M42 135mm f2.5,,,

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

The Voigtlander Lanthar APO Macro 125mm F/2.5 is a very impressive lens.  Not quite 135mm, but close.
The Pentax A* 135mm/1.8 is another excellent lens.

The SMC Pentax version of the 135/2.5 is version 2.  However, to add to the confusion, there is another 135/2.5 called the Takumar(Bayonet), that is inferior to both version 1 and 2.  This version is a 4element/4groups design, and has a filter ring size of

I have limited experience with this focal length (135mm).  But I notice that my Minolta MD 135/2.8 is slightly better than my already good SMC 135/3.5, while Ricoh 135/2.8 is slightly inferior to SMC 135/3.5.  Alll are usable lenses.

I only have two, the Zuiko 135/2.8 and the Meyer Orestor 135/2.8. They're both good for different purposes.

The Zuiko is tiny and light and great for carrying around (and it fits my OM10!).

The Meyer/older Pentacon is simply a steal if you can get a nice condition one for under

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

In terms of global performance , the canon 135 f/2 is perhaps the best 135 mm ever , but I didn't even try it , nor the zeiss and leitz ones.
I only mentioned the 135mm I own and I use . I received a Ta

Re: Which is the "best" 135mm..??

Well, now that you mention others, I also have more 135-lenses which cannot come up to the Sonnars:

Auto Revuenon 1:2.8/135 (Not bad, but not good either. Rather some mediocre performance, but very cheap to get.)
Panagor Auto Tele 1:2.8/135 (Better than the Revuenon, but not fantastic.)
Tamron Twin-Tele 2.8/135 Taisei Kogaku (With only the 135-part rather good, still not amazing.)
Raynox Auto 1:2.8/135 (A little soft, but very pleasant colours.)
Opticam 1:2.8/135 (This is really fine lens, probably the best of the five mentioned here.)

And then (as said above):
Carl Zeiss Sonnar 1:4/135 (Ser.Nr. 58xxxxx) (Picture quality really good, at least as good as the Opticam, but with f4 a little slow.)
Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 4/135 (EOS refit) (Also not a very fast lens - f4 - but excellent picture quality!)

I wouldn't say that these lenses are within the best on the market, but they provide very good performance at reasonable prices.
