Topic: Focussing screen

Not really correctly posted here maybe... hmm

Do any of you know this screen:
http://cgi.ebay.nl/Split-Image-Focus-Sc … dZViewItem
it probably a cheap copy of a Haoda, but maybe worth a try....

Another question about the (Haoda) screen in combination with an Olypmus E-500: do you still see the red lights when usig AF?

Thanks

Re: Focussing screen

MACS, my understanding is that installation of a new focus screen on an E-500 is not trivial.

Plenty of people here are qualified to take things apart and put them back together again in the proper sequence, and maybe you are one of them... If so, "Never mind" in that case.

Just thought it worth mentioning.

Re: Focussing screen

That looks pretty good to me, Marcio. Have you tested how accurate it is?

Yeap... 100%

I can post some pictures tomorrow.

Re: Focussing screen

@Scribo:
Thanks for the warning. smile
I've been browsing the Net for some comments about the screens and the E500, took a look at my cam and decided i will give it a go.
Found a hilarious how-to also:
http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfis … k/e500.htm
let the pictures speek, 'cause you probably cannot make any sense of the textual instructions big_smile
Als found some other reviews that were very comforting: stating it's a 3-4 minute job.
It will take me a bit longer, but I have the advantage to be a pharmacist; in my pharmacy i have a Laminar Air Flow - Workstation (http://www.nuaire.com/laminar_airflow_p … rd_201.htm) i which I am sure no dust will enter the cam. This will give me the extra minutes i need wink

Re: Focussing screen

Hi Marcio, did you ever get those test pics for the Chinese focusing screen done?? Dying to see if it's accurate or not smile frankly a bit confused by all these threads saying that you need shims, no you don't need shims, the shims needs to be adjusted, you won't get red AF lights, yes you do etc etc etc! big_smile It would be great if you could tell me if the Virtual Village screen is:

1) Accurate with MF f2 or larger aperture lenses
2) AF lights work?
3) Metering reasonably accurate?
4) How does it affect the metering and AF modes for standard EF lenses

Of course if I've been silly and overlooked any other threads on this then please someone point me that way!

Re: Focussing screen

Hi Gary,

1) I use with MF f/1.4 f/1.2 lens and i thing that is accurete, i will post some exemple later.
2) You maybe can see the light. But the focus screen dont have the points of reflex. The center light you canot see.
3) I dont see any change in metering. I will test too.
4) The AF works perfect, and metering too on standard EF lens.

I need finish adjust of my home made m42/EOS Adapter.

Re: Focussing screen

Takumar 50mm f/1.4 @ 1.4

http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8809/img1078smallyc3.jpg

It is accurated for me.

Re: Focussing screen

Placed my screen yesterday and did some test shots for accuracy:
Pentacon 50mm/1.8 @ 1.8
http://static.flickr.com/122/257404391_a49d2d53fa.jpg
The numbers are the distance in mm.

Installation in the Olympus E500 was very easy.
There are two shims to keep the screen in place which can easily be used to put the new screen in.
The only problem is that the new screen is of a different shape. The new one does not have the bulge. Because of this can be put in in 4 different ways instead of one.
You have to try the several options to see which is best...

I also spotted another foccussing screen on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.nl/PRO-Split-Image-Focu … dZViewItem
This one does have the bulge, but is also a bit more expensive....

Re: Focussing screen

Hi all,

I've written a new article on http://www.gadgetmiser.com about the Ebay cheapo "Catseye" manual focus screen replacements for the E500 and how to install it. With video!
Please have a read if it's of interest.

Oh that was great, just about the most amusing bit of translation that I've seen.

There are only 10 different types of people, those that understand binary and those that don't.

Re: Focussing screen

I've bought such a screen for my Pentax istDs and I'm 100% happy with it.
The ebay shop is the same. Shipping cost to Germany are really low priced and the package came really quickly.

Re: Focussing screen

I have been looking for a focus screen for my 20D, but it seems that virtual village has got focus screens for all cameras except the 20D. Does anybody know if any screen for the other Canon models, 350D, 400D, or 10D will work on the 20D?

Thanks

Yes. pBase magazine has an article (this months issue) about a company that makes split prism focusing screens for loads of cameras, 20D included . . with optional grid lines of all sorts.
