Re: Blue tit

The feathers of you poor blue tit are tousled in the cold wind : extremely sharp details on the cropped image
. Do you give it some fat ?

I tried hanging up fat balls lol , no pun intended Peter... but the hooded crows kept stealing them... doh!

Re: Blue tit

Lovely shots and birds...I don't know whether blue tits are more uncaring than other birds (could be that they can have so many chicks at times they can't feed them all).... as twice in six years we have found chicks abandoned by the parents and watched them die as it doesn't work bringing them into the house, to feed, as many years ago tried it.

Hope you don't mind me showing this shot in your thread... we gave it some cut up worms and put it back in the hedge:-

Re: Blue tit

I don't mind at all Harold... Living in the sticks, so to speak I've seen quite a few abandoned chicks... the weakest/smallest are pushed out of the nests by the largest/strongest better fed chicks... a case of only the strongest will survive... like you I did try to save a chick but to no avail.

Re: Blue tit

You learn something everyday as for years wondered how a pair of Canada gueese (that I saw) had 19 chicks...huh? Well the other week got the answer from the tv programme "life of birds" and what happens is if another female (with chicks)  wanders into another's terriority then one drives the other away, so the chicks abandoned just join the other family.
