Topic: Olympus OM-D

It's coming, expected to be announced on Feb 8th!

From what we know a new 'pro' weather sealed M43 body that looks like a tradition OM film camera with build in viewfinder. The viewfinder is supposed to be innovative (perhaps big image and very high res). Sensor is a new 16 Mpx high dynamic range (could be a new sensor or a tweaked Panasonic).

Olympus has also indicated that they will be releasing some other items. Maybe we can get some new primes from them along the design of the outstanding 45mm f1.8 and the innovative 12mm f2.

With cool retro OM styling in a small package, a weather-sealed body, built in high-res viewfinder, new better sensor, blazing fast AF like the E-P3 and most importantly build in body image-stabilization for using legacy lenses this could be an awesome camera. It certainly sound more interesting to me than the NEX-7 or Fuji X-Pro1.

Lets see what we get...

Re: Olympus OM-D

If it's got an EVF that can really live up to the OM legacy that'll be enough to make it a fine photographic tool.

I'm looking forward too ... it'll probably be just as far out of my budget as an XPro-1 though if they're going to push it as a pro model :-(

Re: Olympus OM-D

Here's hoping they won't use the same old 12 MP sensor from 2009, like they did with E-P3…

Re: Olympus OM-D

Rumours I've been seeing are 16Mpx sensor and something special in the viewfinder dept, as well as retro looks and feel. More than that I dunno.

First real leaked image of the OM-D. Love the multi-function dials.

Re: Olympus OM-D

Top deck is taking shape with the latest leaked image piece. Love the classic OM look. Hopefully it has a very large viewfinder like the OM's did in that false penta-prism bump in the middle.

Re: Olympus OM-D

Only a week or so to wait :-) Announcement on the 8th Feb (although apparently Canon are lifting the lid on something big on the 7th, maybe 5D mk III or something - bit of an attempt at thunder-stealing you think?)

Well, here's the leaked AD on Print ( large size JPEG )

Actually its more like E-P3 body restyled after the OM. and thrown in some E420 cue, and some from E-5

Addendum : now 4/3 rumor post the full posed shoot of the camera with its vertical grip (click here)

Re: Olympus OM-D

F**k me that's either a very small camera or a huge LCD. Can't say I like the angular grip much, or the sloping shoulders, but that tall VF housing (taller than I was expecting actually) looks like it could be holding something serious, not just a popup flash. Very big eyepiece opening too, could be great for spectacle-wearers. It does look like the most pro-oriented thing Olympus have yet done.

Re: Olympus OM-D

I think it's quite a small camera. Notice it's got two grips attached to the base of the actual camera body to it in the picture, hence the two lock wheels in the back picture. Wonder if the viewfinder tilts up, explaining what looks like a complex configuration of the hump or maybe there is a pop-up flash hiding in there?

Re: Olympus OM-D

I thought the new pentax k 01 was the ugliest "serious camera" in years, but obviously a contest is occurring right now and olympus wins imho.
Will canon take up the challenge ?

Emmanuel, my thoughts exactly smile

Re: Olympus OM-D

Notice the lump above the eyepiece , and the cover of the hotshoe with that extension that cover something, likely the same expansion port that was used for the EVF on the previous E-Pen but used here to connect to accessories like the GPS unit. That would explain why the PRIZM HOUSING being so high ( its a double decker with accessory port on top of the EVF)

In fact , the extra grip + vertical grip is a direct copy of the old OM motor drive , even the line look almost the same. That made it possible to use the camera without any, with only the accessory grip ( with that extra shutter release ) and then further with the vertical grip ( and extra batteries ). Anyway I do agree Pentax and Oly can compete for the title of the most memorable styled mirrorless of this season alright

Re: Olympus OM-D

Well it ain't pretty but if it's effective that should go some way to make up. It kind of looks like a Pen body with some excrescences tacked on. I reckon on most people's wish lists for it are going to be:

The absolute necessities

Very fast AF (should be feasible, Olympus have got good at this) and pro-level performance (good burst rate, fast card write times and a deep buffer).

Massive and responsive EVF, to live up to the OM legacy.

Next generation high performance M4/3 sensor, not the same as the last one in a new body. Genuinely good high ISO, not just about good enough.

Weatherproofing and high build quality (this has already been mentioned on the spec sheets and teasers so should be a given).

And then, cherries on the cake:

Good manual focus assist features (peaking etc).

Good video (seeing as Panasonic look to be running away with this in the sub-fullframe market).

Good menu system and interface that lets you take pics and make adjustments fluidly (Olympus have been notably bad at this in the past although improved recently).

Sensible pricing (i.e. not Fuji X-Pro 1 pricing) - given that it looks very modular, I'd hope the basic body wouldn't cost *too* much. Not entry level obviously but it absolutely has to be highly competitive with Canon, Nikon and Pentax's midrange, "semi-pro" models. That's been Olympus's big sales mistake in the past, aiming their pro models at Canon and Nikon's pro pricing, and it hasn't worked for them as the acid test, pure imaging performance, has really only been at midrange standard.

Re: Olympus OM-D

The Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera was briefly listed on Amazon Japan with a price tag of ¥ 111,258 (around $1,460). The listing is now removed but you can still find the cached version on Google. Expect the US price to be lower. Via 43rumors

I agree, it looks way better without the grip.
(Pentax wins)

Re: Olympus OM-D

Yeah the chrome one's pretty! Speaking in pure aesthetics, it's a shame they kept that digital-Pen style curve across the top plates - a straight line original OM look would have been more nostalgic than a Pen on steroids. But I'm only splitting hairs ... Looks like it'll be smaller than an original OM body too? 37mm filter thread on a lens that looks in proportion to the body the same way the 49mm threaded standard lenses were on the film cams.

Re: Olympus OM-D

I had to agree with the EVF Mag ratio part, One of the key grip[ with OVF and EVF alike are simply that thye do not live up to even old day MF SLR , the serial image size just too small for comfort.

New frontal image of the camera now allows direct size comparison with other cameras.

Re: Olympus OM-D

And a hands-on video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_yutTntp … ata_player

Looks very small and neat, even with both grips! Pricing also looks fairly sensible given its intended market segment - more than the M4/3 viewfinderless compacts but on a par with NEX7 and midrange Canikons. Not sure about some of the features - that live tone curve adjustment looks like a recipe for screwing up a picture by uninformed fiddling, although I'm sure it'd be useful to somebody who knows the damage you can do in PS by overenthusiastic curves manipulation :-) The IBIS also looks pretty next-generation, interesting to see how well that'll work especially with video. Some confusion over the EVF, I've seen both 0.92x and 1.15x stated as max magnification. Will be nice if it's genuinely big and clear.
