Topic: Nikon 50/1.2 and 50/1.4 Comparison
As promised in another thread.
Starting with some lens pics. These were taken with the 50/1.8 AF-d, which will be used as the baseline here. Pardon the dust.

Discuss how to buy, fix, clean, and use all the old manual focus photography kit you can find. M42, Pentacon 6, Contax, Leica, Canon, Nikkor, Carl Zeiss Jena, Asahi Pentax Takumars etc! |

Now the images. These are all lightly processed and reduced to 1,200 pixels.
Three Important Notes:
As usual, all images you see have been resized by the board software. View in a separate tab/window to see the actual size.
These were shot in aperture priority mode, so there might be some minor exposure differences due to the camera making the shutter speed choices.
There's a reflected light source in the background and it's not there by accident. Use it to determine the diaphragm impression when visible.

In my opinion , the 1,4/50 is the best in sharpness and contrast at all apertures ;
The Bokeh at 1,4 is slightly better with the 1,2/50 at 1,4 probably because the contrast is slightly lower .
Thanks for sharing, Elan !
In case you're wondering why I have permanent rubber hoods on these two lenses. Both are very susceptible to flare wide open, especially the 1.2. Here's an example using flash bounced from a high ceiling above. The bounced light managed to enter the optics and cause a red tinge flare, effecting clarity and contrast. The left-right color shift is because the book is tilted.
Edit: This is the 50/1.2 wide open.

I agree. This is what I see.
Sharpness:
1.4
1.8
1.2
Bokeh:
1.2
1.8
1.4
But in real life, the rendering quality of the 1.2 is just plain special, especially with people. Other than that, the 50/1.8 AI-S (not tested here) is the best 50mm Nikkor to buy in my opinion. Just be sure to get the older optical formula with the 0.45m MFD.
Interesting Elan. Thanks for the effort. I think the 50mm f1.2 is better than my 55mm f1.2, the newer 50mm version just seems to be a lot sharper than the old 55mm..

I'm sure you're right, Arlon, but I bet you the 55 also has its own special rendering qualities. I heard it's especially good for portraits. These three lenses, once you hit 2.8 and above, are all plenty sharp. But there are still a lot of small differences between them that can add up to a different presentation. So it becomes a matter of personal preference.
