Re: leica going big.. (new Leica-S medium format digital camera)

That is interesting. I guess there is only so many pixels you can fit in a 24mm x 36mm sensor.
Wonder if Canon and Nikon will go down that road over the next few years with their top end pro cameras?

Re: leica going big.. (new Leica-S medium format digital camera)

while they announced camera with 45x36 mm sensor, still don't understand, why no ff in new m8, for example. and all that new shiny leitz m lenses, perfect for ff. who knows..
but this camera could really be perfect for studio and field work, where top quality matters. they also make leaf shutter lens etc..

With 3 lenses it'll cost as much as my first house did.

Really amazing news. A whole new platform offering both focal plane and leaf shutter lenses! With Leica lens quality too. All that can go wrong is the price smile

...and the price will be...

$35,000 for the body.  That's my official guess.

Anyone else want to try?

I'm not saying you're wrong, but they have some serious competition in the medium format cameras which they can't dismiss as easily as they can dismiss Canon. So they have to compete on price, in which case anything over $20K for a starter kit will be a stretch.

I wonder how fast the fastest flash sync will be. Actually I have a ton of questions. Not long to wait now smile

But Graham..."It's a Leica!"

You may be right.  Are commercial photographers, those with actual budgets and business based decision processes, subject to the "Leica mystique?" Perhaps not.

Commercial photographers demand a lot but are also rather price sensitive. There's no room for show ponies. Dentists on the other hand... big_smile

Someone at RFF ran a poll, "M8 Owners, Are you a dentist?"
A shocking number were.

Dad wanted me to be a dentist.  Perhaps I should have listened.

It's difficult to design a 135-format digital sensor with all the vignetting that the ~28mm film-lens flange distance of the Leica-M mount entails. The new S-mount has no such problem.

Re: leica going big.. (new Leica-S medium format digital camera)

Sorry for asking this naive question...
Is this the new format, Leica is launching (S-mount, 45x36 mm sensor)...   or film cameras/lenses are already available with this format.

It's 30x45mm and a whole new mount. There are 9 new lenses for it already.

Re: leica going big.. (new Leica-S medium format digital camera)

Uh-oh...now even Leica has abandoned aperture rings.

So how does one change the aperture on this system?  That little scroll wheel on the back?  Then what controls exposure compensation?

Ugh.  My frustration with the R9/DMR was that it was very klunky to use.  Controls were there, but hard to get at and hard to use.  This looks like they solved this by just removing the controls rather than fix them.

Good luck, Leica.

Re: leica going big.. (new Leica-S medium format digital camera)

I can see DSLRs with built in sensors.  The whole system is "inexpensive" relative to medium format digital.  I'm not sure I see cameras at this price level that will be made obsolete (in the minds of many users) relying on a built in sensor.
It seems to me that the digital back might be a better system.  Maybe not.
I've never had to make a buying decision for a camera at this level, so I'm not sure how that would go.

What do you think Graham?  Assuming this thing can give you state of the art performance at the moment, do you invest in it knowing that in a few years it'll be seriously behind the power curve?
