Topic: 58mm 1:1.2 Rokkor-PG Converted for Nikon

Hey all,  I just joined to learn about the Rokkor conversions as i have an old 58mm 1.2.  I just completed my conversion to Nikon mount and took some of my first pictures with it(in the parking lot woopeeee)  I will post some shots after lunch of how the lense looks and some shots of how it works on my D40.  The conversion was a little more invasive than the Cannon conversions I've looked at but after a bunch of fiddle faddle it appears that i landed quite accidently on near perfect infinite focus after lots of taking the lense apart and putting it back together and a lot of filing/fitting.

Has anyone else done a Nikon conversion on this lense, I looked all over but could find no reference.  The only ones I saw were to Cannon or to Sony.  Anyway, shots to follow after I can get some nice pictures at lunch.

Thanks,

Jason

Congrats, I have only ever heard of EOS and Sony conversions.

If you find that the lens is going past infinity, you can adjust the focus by unscrewing the name ring and adjusting where the focus ring attaches. More details are available in some older threads.

Yup had to do some adjustments there and had to reposition the Helical gear so the lens went deeper at infinity.  At the same time the spacer ring had to be cut down to wafer thin.  The apearture lever(not really positive if thats what it is) in the camera was catching the edge of the rear lense group and I had to shave the group to clear as well as clearance at the top(as with the EOS conversions).

THis is one to show the infinity focus followed by a blowup of one of the towers in the background.  NOT BAD for Blind dumb luck!

Love this lense, no question, But will really have to get used to the short DOF.

Wow, very bold colors from the D40!

Does the D40 have interchangable focusing screens? Focus is tricky at f/1.2 on stock DSLR screens.

The Auto focus system still functions even in Manual mode(the only mode that will allow the lense to work). It pops up its "in focus" indicator when it sees the image is focused.  It seems to work fairly well, the biggest challenge is the DOF as it can be hard to judge where the AF is actually taking its cue.  Up close for flowers and stuff its not to bad to get the right focus.

I haven't looked into the screens yet.

This pic indicates that the lens doesn't sit perfectly in parallell with the mount, unfortunately. You clearly see that the bottom is way unsharper than the top:-/

I noticed that as well, I am going to do some tests to see if that is the issue.  When I took that shot my head was about level with the mail slot and I was angled upwards and focusing near the top of the windows, I wondered if it might just be a depth of field issue rather than a parallel issue.  I do know that I had some issues machining the ring as my lathe chuck is a little messed up.  I am hoping to make a new ring at some point that I can verify is a uniform thickness.  For most of the photos I take this wouldnt be an issue but after testing i will know if that is indeed the issue.  I am also planing to rotate the mount so that the apperature scale is off to one side so it is easier to read as now it is lost below the flash housing.

See how this one looks, Taken from about 15 feet camera square to the wall and focused at the center, aperature at 1.2, 200iso and 1/500.  Seems Ok in this shot but would like to here what you think about it.

Thanks,

Hey!

Give me a peep if you read this thread again! Let me know how you did this rokkor conversion smile

Re: 58mm 1:1.2 Rokkor-PG Converted for Nikon

Hi.

I would also like to know how you did this. I converted a couple of M42 lenses to Nikon F (the diference in the register distance is much smaller), and it was not so simple.

Also, is you conversion "for good" or is it reversible? I also have a D40, and a couple of Minolta MD lenses...

Thanks in advance. Bye.

Re: 58mm 1:1.2 Rokkor-PG Converted for Nikon

Would love to see pics of the lens itself, especially if you have progress shots as you did the conversion... Would also be interested to know what parts you found worked for this conversion.

I'm about to attempt a conversion myself. smile
