The other day I attain Sony's local launch event for the A55/A33 and A560/A580. Clearly Sony onto the A33/A55 series as the other 2 got quite a lesser portionoverage on the event. But let me put in my first impression.

Top get to the conclusion. No the EVF is still no match to the OVF , but its good enough in most causal usage and those that do not require quick response ( chasing your running dog on the lawn at sunset is not going to be fun with this ). The key thing about this A series to me is their size and their non moving mirror. That would mean a lot of our old Manual Focus lens can be adapted even if its rear element prove sticking into the mirror box. So long its not so much as hitting the mirror ( and that would need some intrusion ) it can be used. The form factor of this camera is also more akin to older MF SLR ( with a grip though ). I had a chance to put on an Alpha mount adapter with some of my old lens. The EVF prove quite usable. The image I made ( not allowed to publish ) do align with current imaging as other APS-C DSLR goes. My 75 Biotar look absolutely hugh in front of the mount ( and even the Sony marketing team got so excited about that they ask me to loan them the lens so they can made a short Video using the lens on A55 just for the fun of it ( way too little DOF I had to say ). There is also the NEX on hand for us to play with, and I must say while I do like the NEX for its sheer compactness and image quality. Adapting MF lens on it is not much fun in practice.

Between this and the Samsung NX-10 ( the only other current EVIL APS-C ), the Sony is a better one I say, though the Samsung is way slimmer ( Samsung should really develop a lineup of lens much like their 30mm )

The mirroless had evolved into the ILC and EVIL niche, this 2 category , to me surely looks like going to eat a lot into the DSLR market and ultimately I think DSLR / EVIL / ILC would made a rather fulfilling as a whole.

One of the advantages of using M42 lenses is not to be to tied up with a camera manufacturer. A simple adapter change and of you go! But this bring the question: what is the best digital body for our old friends?

Two years ago, I bought a used Canon 30D that lead me to these nice gems that are the Takumars. Now, my 30D is showing signs of exhaustion with error 99 repetitively and i'm starting to think which body would I chose if I were to buy a new one. I have one modern lens with Canon mount, a 17-70 Sigma, so the lens argument is not worth forcing me to a Canon camera.

For now, the new Sony SLT-A55 looks to be a good partner having stabilization inside de body and the electronic view finder offering zoom-in for precise focusing. I have not tested it yet as my camera store did not get it's sample yet, but I can imagine that the it will allow to use the lenses closed to see correctly the depth of field.

What do you think? What would you chose as a camera body to pair with m42 lenses?

Bernard

My A-1 was overexposing the shots by more than 2 stop. I opened it up to see what could be wrong and discovered that it had a white crystalline covering on its photo cell (SPC).

I did a bit of searching on the web and have found that it is apparently a common problem with the A-series cameras. I have seen forum posts and web pages showing the problem with AE-1 and also with AE-1 Program cameras. Apparently it is due to some chemical reaction with the coating on the SPC's glass surface. The problem appears to be quite common. Only the very early models seem not to be affected with this. However, it also appears as if the problem is not as commonly reported.

In my case, the A-1's was metering a frame by more than +2 stops (so overexposing by that margin). This was due to less light that was being detected by the SPC due to the covering on it. I removed that covering carefully (scrapped it off) and the SPC glass window's surface now appears to be clean. However, I am still left with an error of a little more than +1 stop. I am wondering if I should try to detach that glass cover (more likely, it is just glued on) of the SPC and clean its inner surface as well.

Anybody else have related experience to share? Anybody tried to remove the glass cover (window) of the SPC to clean it?
